Venetian Plaster

Venetian plaster is created when plaster is mixed with marble dust and then applied to a wall or ceiling in several thin layers. It is then polished to create a smooth surface such as travertine, limestone or marble.

While there are three types of Venetian plaster techniques, the most common is Marmorino plaster (also known as classic Venetian plaster), which was used as far back as the Roman times, but reached a peak of popularity in Venice during the Renaissance. Made from crushed marble and lime putty, it can be tinted to be a variety of colors and applied to create various textures from a polished marble to other types of stone. The other two Venetian plaster techniques are Scagliola (a technique for producing columns and other architectural elements as a substitute for marble), and Sgraffito (a type of wall décor).

Marmorino plaster has natural waterproof and anti-bacterial properties, which makes it a wonderful option for luxury bathrooms or any room where you want to make a subtle, yet dramatic impact.
